Behaviour and Bullying
The Headteacher and Staff of our school continually strive to achieve a calm, comfortable and learning atmosphere, presenting clear boundaries of what is acceptable and non-acceptable behaviour. The core aim of the school is for pupil’s to develop the intrinsic desire to develop themselves so they can manage their own behaviour and take responsibility for this.
The Whole School Approach
-The ethos and atmosphere of the School, created by the Staff is pre-requisite to all. It is calm and respectful place that values diversity and pupil voice.
-Relationships and understanding every child as an individual is at the heart of all at Adelaide.
-A good example from staff is essential. A calm non-threatening attitude is most effective.
-Standards expected of pupils should be clear and maintained as consistently as possible.
-The ultimate aim is self-controlled pupil behaviour. Pupils should be therefore encouraged to take responsibility for themselves. Older pupils often act as role models for younger children.
-Pupils are expected to behave in a respectful, sensible and courteous manner at all times and to treat others and property with care and respect.
-Specific guidance and direction will be given by members of staff to students behaving inappropriately. Giving the pupil time to calm and reflect on the situation.
-Where pupils become more agitated and disruptive, PRICE (Protecting Rights In a Caring Environment) methods may be employed.
-Pupils should be aware that staff in school take the main responsibility for decisions, but the feelings and opinions of pupils are very important, and we encourage them to provide their views on any intervention that may have taken place.
-Teachers will always reflect on their own feelings and interactions with pupils and the way in which these may be influencing pupil behaviour. Staff share strategies and support each other to best meet the needs of individual pupils.
When Things Go Right
Staff and pupils work together and create a calm working environment where all are valued. Rewards are used throughout the school to recognise good learning behaviours and a positive contribution to the school community. Much of the positive behaviour in school is created by encouraging all pupils to develop the intrinsic desire to improve.
We are committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for everyone so we can learn in a relaxed and secure atmosphere. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at our school. Staff monitor all pupil interactions very carefully. If bullying does occur, everyone should be able to report the incidents and know that they will be dealt with promptly and effectively. We are a TELLING school. This means that anyone who knows that bullying is happening should feel able to talk about it. We have a pupil Safeguarding Group who monitor and support their peers in school.
Pupils learn about positive and unhealthy relationships including bullying every year as part of the PSHE curriculum. Discussions around peer interactions are also ongoing throughout school continually. We have focused anti-bullying days in school regularly.
There is an anti-bullying policy which is reviewed regularly.
Bullying can be:
- Emotional- Being unfriendly, leaving somebody out, picking on people (e.g. hiding books, threatening gestures)
- Physical - Pushing, kicking, hitting, punching or any use of violence
- Racist- Inappropriate references and jokes
- Sexual- Unwanted physical contact or sexually abusive comments
- Homophobic- Picking on somebody because of their sexuality
- Verbal- Name-calling, sarcasm, spreading rumours, teasing
- Cyber- All areas of the internet, such as email and social media or threats using text messaging, calls and videoing
Students are encouraged to talk to staff and each other about any issues related to bullying.
Numbers for national help line agencies such as Childline and the NSPCC are displayed around school.
Pupils completed a photography project about mental health.
If Bullying is identified…
- Any incidences of bullying are recorded on incident forms. Any members of staff can add to this. Any time this happens all staff will be made aware of the bullying issuE.
- The issue is discussed with the pupils involved.
- The pupil who is responsible for the bullying will be spoken to about their actions and the possible consequences of these.
- Sanctions will be put in place. Examples could include loss of breaks or computer time.
- The school will speak to parents/carers about the situation and a course of action will be agreed.
- Pupils will lose privileges.
Following Incidences of Bullying
- Every effort should be made to rebuild relationships between the pupil who is being bullied and the person responsible.
- After the incident/incidents have been investigated and dealt with, each case will be monitored to ensure repeated bullying does not take place.
